Understanding contribution beyond the last interaction
Customers may encounter several campaigns before enquiring or buying, while parts of their journey remain unobserved. Assigning all credit to the last recorded interaction gives a limited view. A model can offer another perspective, but its result depends on the data, assumptions and method used. Journey-based attribution and marketing mix modelling answer different questions. The appropriate approach depends on the decision, available history, level of detail and the other factors that may affect demand.
How the workflow is structured
Use these points to define the requirements and responsibilities for your setup.
Define the decision
Specify whether the question concerns channel allocation, campaign evaluation or a broader investment scenario. Agree the outcome and period being assessed.
Review the evidence
Assess recorded interactions, spend, business outcomes and relevant context. Identify missing coverage and changes in collection or definitions.
Choose and explain the method
Document the inputs, assumptions and limits. Make clear whether the output describes observed journeys, an estimated contribution or a scenario.
Compare and learn
Review estimates alongside commercial evidence and suitable tests. Use differences to identify questions, rather than presenting a model as a complete account of every sale.
Assessing a channel with few direct conversions
A discovery campaign generates engagement but receives little last-click credit. The review considers its timing, audience overlap, other marketing activity and available experiments. A different attribution view may change the interpretation, but it does not by itself prove the campaign caused additional sales.
Interpreting the result
Ask how sensitive the output is to the chosen period and assumptions, and what evidence would change the conclusion. The data requirements and suitable validation approach should be established before committing to a modelling exercise. A useful result explains both the estimate and its limits.
Discuss your attribution questions
Share the business question and the systems involved. We can work through the requirements and define a suitable next step.
